Dana Holgorsen: Succession plan at West Virginia won't be a problem

Expectations will be high as soon as Dana Holgorsen steps on the West Virginia University campus in Morgantown. The former Oklahoma State offensive coordinator is the man Mountaineers athletic director Oliver Luck believes can lead the football team to a national championship.

â€œIt's a challenge,â€ said Holgorsen during his introductory press conference at West Virginia on Wednesday. â€œBut if you're at a place that has a chance to get that accomplished, you're at the right place.â€

And Holgorsen believes he's in the right place. That's one of the reasons he decided to accept the Mountaineers' offer to become a part of a succession plan that will give him the reins of the West Virginia program by 2012 at the latest. Holgorsen will be West Virginia's offensive coordinator in 2011 before replacing current head coach Bill Stewart in 2012.

â€œYou want to go somewhere where you are surrounded by good people and where you are in a position to win football games,â€ Holgorsen said. â€œHere, it's 60 wins in six years. You have a chance to win and be with some good people that are all focused on winning a championship. It was a pretty easy decision.â€

The succession plan seems ripe for strife and infighting among the coaching staff, but Holgorsen doesn't expect that to be an issue in 2011, because everyone will be working toward the same goal: Winning football games.
