The Emmy Award-winning Showtime drama “Homeland” returns for its third season with Carrie (Claire Danes) in the hot seat at the forefront of a Senate investigation in the aftermath of last season’s terrorist bombing of the CIA’s headquarters

The grilling that goes on during the investigation is anything but pleasant, and Carrie attempts to do what she can to get her story heard. But that doesn’t exactly put her in the good graces of the CIA.

With Brody (Damian Lewis) on the run, Jessica (Morena Baccarin) is trying to hold her family together and daughter Dana (Morgan Saylor) is especially struggling, although she’s found a new friend, Leo (Sam Underwood.) (“Dexter” fans will recognize Underwood from his role as Zach Hamilton from that show’s final season).

Saul (Mandy Patinkin) is committed to finding who’s behind the bombing and a new and interesting character is brought into the show to assist him on his mission.

The first couple of episodes of this season are characteristically intense and well-acted and provide the setup for plot lines that should lead to more compelling television for “Homeland” fans.

Season Three of “Homeland” debuts at 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29 on Showtime.
