Goodbye, Bicycle Bob.

It seems everyone in Edmond knew of him, but few really knew him. For years, he was just an anonymous figure pedaling the Edmond streets alone at all hours and in all kinds of weather.

He was born Dwite A. Morgan 54 years ago. How he came to be known as Bicycle Bob is a small mystery.

Few knew his choice of bedding was a shallow creek running behind comfortable Edmond homes or under the railroad bridge on Second Street. On extremely cold winter nights, police would find him wrapped up, sleeping in a trash container.

He was as much a recognizable fixture in this town as any statue or fancy house.

And then suddenly, Bob was gone. No fanfare. No doctors or nurses or family at his side to say goodbye. He lived alone; he died alone.

Every city has a Bob or hundreds like him — those who for some reason live life by their wits relying on the barest of necessities to exist. But I dare say no homeless person has drawn as much attention and affection as our Bob.

Just as Edmond residents opened their hearts offering food or coffee to Bob in his life, there is an amazing outpouring of compassion and affection from residents after the man’s death.
