A woman ran screaming from a home after a man was fatally shot Wednesday at Will Rogers Courts in southwest Oklahoma City, police and residents said.
Police responded to a shooting call about 11:15 a.m. in the 1700 block of Pettee Avenue near SW 15 and S Pennsylvania Avenue, Master Sgt. Gary Knight said.
They found Marquise Kyhief Callender, 22, dead inside an apartment. Callender's death is the 21st homicide of 2013 in Oklahoma City, Knight said.
Milisha Anderson and her cousin, Alicia Cotton, said a group of people ran from the apartment after the shooting, including a screaming woman.
“We saw people running out of the house, screaming frantically, saying they were going to kill us and stuff like that,” Anderson said. “The police came a few minutes later. They put the woman in the car and found out someone was dead.”
No arrests have been made and suspect information was not available Wednesday, Knight said.
The incident drew residents out of their homes.
Violent fights, shootings and drug sales are a common occurrence at the complex, residents said. The area also is fraught with gang activity.
Several residents said they live in fear because of the violence, but never talk to police because they are afraid of gangs.
They said children who live at the complex stay indoors or on front porches, close to their parents.
Will Rogers Courts is a 348-unit public housing complex at 1620 Heyman St., said Melanie Buckley, assistant executive director of the Oklahoma City Housing Authority.
A 24-hour security force patrols the area, Buckley said. Residents said they also see Oklahoma City and Oklahoma County authorities on patrol in the complex.
