David Edward Bloebaum, 57, is accused of shooting and killing Jasen Yousif, 29, about 4:30 p.m. Sept. 28 in the parking lot of SuperTarget, 13924 N Pennsylvania Ave.
Police said road rage may have prompted the deadly shooting.
“He took my son from me for no reason whatsoever. No reason,” Annie Yousif said outside the courtroom. “I hope he gets what he deserves, what's coming to him.”
Yousif's mother was led away by a sheriff's deputy earlier in the day after confronting Bloebaum during a break in his preliminary hearing.
Annie Yousif yelled “murderer” and told Bloebaum, “I hope you fry … in hell,” as Bloebaum waited for a courthouse elevator.
Prosecutors allege Bloebaum followed Yousif into the parking lot and instigated a confrontation before shooting him five times, including three times in the back, with a .380 caliber handgun investigators found on the passenger seat of his pickup.
Prosecutors said Bloebaum did not have a permit for the weapon.
Defense attorneys claim Bloebaum acted in self-defense, shooting Yousif because he approached Bloebaum's pickup with a knife while yelling obscenities.
“The evidence in the case suggests otherwise,” said District Attorney David Prater, who is prosecuting the case. “The defendant basically baits him over to his car, rolls down his window and shoots and kills him. So you tell me what that is. I say it's murder.”
