HUNTSVILLEAs the Hornets and their new head coach, Rodney Southern, continue to get more acquainted, there will also be a handful of new faces that the Huntsville boys will learn to get accustomed to.
Though there are plenty of coaches still employed at other school districts, Southern is slowly but steadily putting his coaching staff together.
“We’re not complete yet. There’s still some transition with some of the guys who are leaving,” Southern said. “We’re bringing the people we need to bring. They’ve met with principals and we’re doing the stuff we need to do.”
Remaining as Hornets assistants are Jason Elliott and Dean Schaub, who will coach the offense and defensive line, respectively.
“Coach Elliott has been here and Coach Schaub has been here,” Southern said.
Joining the coaching staff will be David Brewer, who will be the offensive coordinator and also work with the quarterbacks, defensive coordinator Thedrick Harris, who will take over in Huntsville in the same capacity, and Scott Schroeder, who will work with the offensive line.
Brewer, Harris and Schroeder have worked with Southern extensively in the past.
“Both coordinators are here,” Southern said. “David Brewer will be the offensive coordinator and this will be the 13th year that we’ve worked together. Coach Schroeder is here full-time now and he was with me for three football seasons in Belton, so this will be year No. 4 for us.”
“Coach Thedrick Harris is the (defensive) coordinator. This is week 2 or 3 for him. He was my D coordinator in my five years at Marshall and became the head coach at Marshall after I left. He’s been over at Copperas Cove with me before and he was at Copperas Cove recently. He, Coach Brewer and I were all together at Marshall for five years.
“It’s been exciting for me to get that whole group back together.”
These five assistants are among those who will also be coaching the Hornets in the fall.
There are still several more spots that will be filled in the near future.
“In a perfect world, we’d get to a point where we’d have five (coaches) on offense and five on defense,” Southern said. “They did freshman (football) this past year with three and I’d like to have four freshman coaches.
“We won’t have a full staff here in the spring. I’ve got it worked out with several of them and there’ll be days when they’ll be able to be here. We’re going to use some of our middle school coaches.
“Everybody will be involved. It won’t be the same set-up that we’ll use in the fall, obviously. I’ve got a couple of guys who can’t get out of where they are until the end of the school year. It’s part of the transition.”
Instead of getting an additional week of summer workouts in August, Southern has opted for the Hornets to take part in spring football.
The 18-practice session will begin next Thursday and conclude on May 30 with the Green-White Game.
