Missing hospital cross is found

A 5,200-pound steel cross, presumed stolen Saturday from a south Oklahoma City sign shop where it was being refurbished, was found Wednesday. The cross, which is about eight feet tall, was removed July 6 from the Logan County Memorial Hospital and taken to a sign shop to be restored. It had rusted and needed to have its lights and supports repaired. The cross was found intact Wednesday at an Oklahoma City scrapyard. “We're thrilled to confirm the cross has been found in one piece at an Oklahoma City scrapyard. We're so thankful we can return the cross to the community that loves it so much. Thank you to the honest Oklahomans who helped us bring our cross home,” said Josh Tucker, administrator of Mercy Hospital Logan County, in a statement. “The week before last, we had the cross removed from the old hospital in Guthrie so it could be refinished and installed at the new hospital in Guthrie,” Tucker said. “That cross means a lot to the people of Logan County. It's hard to understand why someone would want to steal something that has such emotional value to so many in our community.” The cross was a gift to Mercy from the Sam Coury family, owners of the Logan County Memorial Hospital building. The sign shop, whose name wasn't provided by Mercy officials, has filed a police report, hospital officials said.
