Two former Oklahoma State golfers have set themselves up well after the first day of the British Open.
Rickie Fowler is in a tie for eighth after shooting a 3-under par 69 at Royal Liverpool on Thursday. Another former Cowboy, Hunter Mahan, is just two shots back in a tie for 31st at 1-under (71).
Peter Uihlein (Oklahoma State) and Todd Hamilton (Oklahoma) each shot 5-over 77, good for a tie for 130th.
Rory McIlroy stands alone as the leader after the first round after shooting a 6-under 66. Matteo Manassero is a shot back at 5-under (67) and a five-man logjam of Brooks Koepka, Edoardo Molinari, Francesco Molinari, Jim Furyk and Sergio Garcia are tied for third (-4).
Tiger Woods, playing in his first major since back surgery earlier this year, is right there with Fowler at 3-under (69).
