How states fared on unemployment aid applications

More people sought unemployment benefits last week, pushing the number of applicants to the highest level in two months. The Labor Department said Thursday that weekly unemployment benefit applications jumped 13,000 to a seasonally adjusted 380,000.
Here are the states with the biggest increases and decreases in applications. The state data are for the week ended March 31, one week behind the national data.
States with the biggest increases:
Oregon: Up 2,079, due to rise in claims at end of first quarter
Pennsylvania: Up 1,866, due to layoffs in the construction, manufacturing and trade industries
Illinois: Up 1,024, due to layoffs in construction, administrative services and trade
States with the biggest decreases:
Texas: Down 1,633, no reason given
Florida: Down 1,556, due to fewer layoffs in the service, trade, construction, manufacturing and retail industries
New York: Down 1,216, due to fewer layoffs in food service, construction and professional services
