How the major US stock indexes fared Wednesday
Stock indexes closed mostly lower on Wednesday.
Traders were watching closely to see whether Cyprus successfully reopens its banks Thursday after a two-week shutdown. They're also unsettled by Italy's failure to form a government and get moving with economic reforms.
The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 33.49 points, or 0.2 percent, to close at 14,526.16.
The S&P 500 fell 0.92 of a point, less than 0.1 percent, to close at 1,562.85.
The Nasdaq composite index rose 4.04 points, or 0.1 percent, to 3,256.52.
For the week:
The Dow is up 14.13 points, or 0.1 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 5.96, or 0.4 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 11.52, or 0.4 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 1,422.02 points, or 10.9 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 136.66, or 9.6 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 237.01, or 7.9 percent.
