Hundreds turn out in Oklahoma City for free medical care

More than 800 people turned up at State Fair Park’s Oklahoma Expo Hall in Oklahoma City for the first day of a free medical care event run by Rural Area Medical Oklahoma; 700 of those people were served within the first three hours of the event.

After waiting all night, Donna Jacobs rejoiced as she walked out of the Oklahoma Expo Hall on Saturday morning.

The 63-year-old retired caregiver left State Fair Park with a pep in her step and a new pair of eyeglasses on her face.

“I can see,” she shouted as she passed those still waiting in line to get service. “It’s worth the wait, they’ll get you all fixed up.”

More than 800 people turned up for the first day of the free medical care event run by Rural Area Medical Oklahoma; 700 of those people were served within the first three hours of the event.

People traveled from across the state to receive the free dental, vision and limited medical care, with lines to get in the door forming late Friday night.

Rashad Young, 36, said his job had medical insurance but no dental coverage, and a simple teeth cleaning from his local dentist would’ve cost him more than he could pay. He was able to get a cleaning Saturday for free.

“That’s why this is a godsend,” he said. “I’m just trying to take care of myself and be healthy. You can tell how many people need this by how many people are out here.”
