Hungary appeals order to play in empty stadium
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Hungary's Football Association has asked sport's highest court to quash FIFA's order to play a World Cup qualifier in an empty stadium because of fans' anti-Semitic abuse.
With Hungary hosting neighboring Romania in a key match on March 22, the appeal urges the Court of Arbitration for Sport to freeze the FIFA sanction while the case proceeds.
CAS says it expects to decide next week on the interim request.
The court is seeking a date for the full appeal hearing.
FIFA punished Hungary after fans abused the Israeli team at the Ferenc Puskas Stadium in Budapest during a friendly last August.
FIFA fined Hungary 40,000 Swiss francs ($43,400).
Hungary and Romania each have nine points in the six-team qualifying group, and trail the Netherlands by three points.
