Hunter education facts

•Who must have it by law?

Hunters ages 10 to 35.

•Who isn't legally required to have it?

Hunters age 36 or older; Military personnel who have been honorably discharged or currently on active duty; Members of the Oklahoma National Guard.

Hunters age 9 or younger must have hunter education to buy a big game (deer, antelope or elk) license.

Hunters age 9 or younger can hunt small game without hunter education if accompanied by a licensed adult hunter.

Any adult who hasn't received hunter education can buy an apprentice license and hunt with a licensed hunter who is age 21 or older.

•Some fear the more lenient apprentice licenses, which became available last year, will lead to more hunting accidents. Meek doesn't think so.

"What's safer?,” he said. "A 12-year-old with hunter education hunting alone or a 12-year-old without it who is sitting right next to his dad?”
