I-35 in Payne County reopens; grass fire blackens 4,000-5,000 acres

North- and southbound lanes of Interstate 35 are closed at mile marker 174 due to a large grass fire.

Update: 6:21 p.m.

The fire near Interstate 35 and State Highway 51 burned 4,000 to 5,000 acres this afternoon, Stillwater Fire Marshall Trent Hawkins told a local television station. One structure was burned and one person had a minor injury, he said. As many as 30 departments helped fight the blaze.

At 6:15 p.m., I-35 was open, Hawkins said.

Update: 5:17 p.m.

A large grassfire has caused the closure of northbound and southbound Interstate 35 at Exit 55 in Murray County.

Update: 5:11 p.m.

Interstate 35 is closed north of the Turner Falls area at mile marker 55 because of a grass fire, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.

The area, near the Murray County-Garvin County line, is between Ardmore and Pauls Valley.

Update: 4:49 p.m.

Southbound Interstate 35 has been shut down at mile marker 186 near Perry and vehicles are being diverted onto U.S. 77. Northbound I-35 remains closed and vehicles are being diverted onto Mulhall Road.

PAYNE COUNTY - A large wildfire in Payne County has closed all the north and southbound lanes of Interstate 35 and also State Highway 51 east of I-35 to State Highway 86, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reports.

Several wrecks have been reported on I-35 and ambulances have been dispatched to the area although all indications are the injuries are minor, a Payne County Sheriff's dispatcher said at 3:40 p.m.

The fire is still moving north to northeast, and the Stillwater Fire Department is in the lead with help from the surrounding area.

The fire is about 15 miles west of Stillwater

The interstate was closed as of 2:48 p.m., the patrol said.
