There are only two places the peanut butter candies can be — in the bag or in his mouth.
Luke was one of the contestants in the ice cream sundae contest at the 94th annual Oklahoma County Free Fair. Luke's division — 4 and younger — was tough. Mostly because he and the other competitors wanted to eat their ice cream before I had the chance to judge. Then again, how on earth do you judge how well toddlers can make sundaes?
This was my third year to judge the contest, which is always hilarious. The kids are so creative. They bring everything but the ice cream, and they build everything from traditional sundaes to marshmallow towers. My favorite unique ingredients this year were cheese snack crackers, dried mangos and grapes.
Drew Hoke had one of the most creative sundaes — a tribute to the Olympics. He used red candy letters to spell USA and covered his ice cream in blue sprinkles. He even wore an American flag T-shirt.
Joy Cortesio patiently flattened out her ice cream before pulling out seashells and cookie crumbs to make a sundae beach. Ashley Darkhurst used fish crackers in her fisherman scene. I asked her if cheddar crackers would taste good with ice cream. She smiled and shrugged her shoulders. She's right — who cares?
Adults ask practical questions like that. Children are smart enough to shrug them off.
Grapes and ice cream? To me that sounds like a bad mix. But Lorena Tepe grinned the whole time she ate her grape-themed creation.
Grown-ups like me need a reminder that it's OK to try things that are weird or different. It's even OK to eat Reese's Pieces before they make it to the ice cream.
The unconventional can make us uncomfortable, but it can turn out to be delicious. Now if only we had enough courage to try new things — like cheese crackers in ice cream.
