ICYMI: 5 stories that made you ask 'what the what?!' (March 14 edition)

You know those news items that make you shake your head, thinking, “What is the world coming to?”

Or, those news items that makes you wonder, “How in the heck is this even news?!”

This blog post will point out a mix of the two, using news items that made me react in similar ways throughout the week. Beginning with…

5. Oklahoma Fox station cuts off ‘Cosmos’ during segment on evolution

Turns out it was all a simple technical error, but our local Fox affiliate (KOKH) cut off the oh-so-popular “Cosmos” television special at the exact moment the program was going to briefly talk about evolution.

Here’s YouTube video of it:

Evolution is one of them touchy subjects here in Oklahoma, and one Oklahoman on the Facebook put it pretty well:

4. Oklahoma Rep. Sally Kern thinks tongue piercings are bad, mmkay?

Here, just read this and brace yourself for the facepalm of the century.

3. Small-town Oklahoma police departments gettin’ armored up

OK, so the Iron Patriot (pictured) isn’t going to be showing up in Guthrie anytime soon, but the city’s police force is just one of our state’s cities to be getting vehicles like the ones pictured below (image courtesy Fox 25):

Guthrie Police Chief Damon Devereaux said the vehicle isn’t something citizens should fear, despite it being “mine-resistant,” having bulletproof windows and has tires that “can crush almost anything on the road.”

Yeah, chief: Nothing to fear, riiiiight.

2. George Zimmerman is still an oaf

George Zimmerman, the man who was acquitted on murder charges after he fatally shot Trayvon Martin, really seems to love the limelight: He attended an Orlando-area gun show where he signed autographs and gave photo ops.

Whether you agree with how the trial ended or not, it’s pretty clear Zimmerman should just lay low for a long while.

1. Houston father shoots, kills teen boy found inside daughter’s room

This is one of those stories where you wonder: What in the world?

It’s a sad story, one that should never make news headlines because it all, allegedly, came down to a lie that did the kid in.

Basically: A Houston father caught a 17-year-old boy inside of his 16-year-old daughter’s bed, in her room. The father had a gun with him, and when he questioned the two kids about the identity of the boy, the girl denied knowing him. When the boy reportedly reached for something, the father opened fire, thinking it might have been a weapon. The daughter later admitted to knowing the boy.

It’s something that, if the stories are to be believed, could have been easily avoided. Had the father been told the truth and found out it was a boyfriend instead of a stranger (who could’ve been trying to do God-knows-what), the poor kid might still be alive.
