Idabel golfer streaks to regional golf honors

Mac Bentley Published: April 25, 2002

Lacey Jones of Idabel tuned up for defense of her Class 4A golf championship by winning a girls high school regional tournament at Kingfisher Golf Club on Wednesday.

Jones shot a 75 in strong winds, and no one came closer than nine strokes.

Cushing's Natalie Dotson, who lost to Jones by three strokes in the state tournament last year, won the other Class 4A regional with a 78 at Cushing Country Club. Hilldale's Marissa Wright, a state runnerup in 2000 and a fourth-place finisher last year, trailed Dotson with an 82.

Eight regional tournaments, two each in Classes 6A, 5A, 4A and 3A, were held on Wednesday to qualify teams for state tournaments scheduled next Wednesday and Thursday, May 1-2.

Jones is the only returning champion.

The 2001 Class 5A champ, Stephanie Ruiz of Edmond Memorial, placed 18th for Nebraska in the Big 12 tournament last weekend. The 2001 Class 4A champ, Liz Kester of Tulsa Kelley, played for Northeastern State this season but was not in the lineup for the Lone Star Conference meet. The 2001 Class 3A champ, Jaryn Rainey of Turner, was a senior this year but graduated early for health reasons.

Amanda Costner of Claremore and Toni Pyrum of Ada appear headed to a shoot-out in Class 5A.

Costner, who lost to Kester in a playoff for the state title last year, shot a 75 to win the regional at Broken Arrow Golf & Athletic Club. Pyrum, who placed third last year, four strokes behind the Kester and Costner, shot a 73 to win the regional at Lakeview in Ardmore.
