IHOP waiter files for office

IHOP waiter Dustin McGowen said he wants to offer an unconventional idea this election year that Republicans, like him, don’t often promote: Change.

“Just because I’m a Republican doesn’t mean I can’t change things,” said McGowen, 21, who filed for House District 54 today.

He said he’s running because “there’s never been a better time for young people to get involved in our state’s political process.”

For McGowen, a Moore resident, change would mean debating on the floor of the State House rather than taking orders at the local IHOP.

McGowen said he knows from personal experience how the nation’s struggling economy affects Oklahomans. McGowen waits tables and has another job to pay for his rent, food and upcoming final year at Northeastern State University, where he studies political science.

A longtime political junkie, McGowen said he was first bitten by the political bug at 11 years old when he became enamored with the drama of former President Bill Clinton’s impeachment hearings in 1998.

Incumbent Rep. Paul Wesselhoft, R-Moore, filed Monday to defend his seat.

Wesselhoft, 60, said this afternoon that he didn’t know of McGowen’s candidacy, but “it means I’ll have to do some fundraising and work hard.

“I will take every candidate seriously,” said Wesselhoft, chairman of the House Industry and Labor committee.

In a year where change and youth are at the forefront of the Democrats’ political stage, McGowen said those qualities aren’t solely for liberals.

“Younger people – people who don’t necessarily have as much experience – can benefit our state by offering new solutions to old problems,” McGowen said. “I don’t have to look at things through the glass of how things have been done before.”

I think McGowen will do a great job. He is very well versed in Oklahoma issues and is very passionate about those issues.

Funny comments, but this guy seems legit. At least sincere. Restaurants pay peanuts, and it's cool to see someone from the lower pay grades wanting to run for office.

If he wins, the loser should have to take his place at IHOP.

A Republican IHOP waiter? Strange to say the least. Has to be the only Republican working for minimum wage I've ever heard of. If elected the price of cooking oil is bound to triple!

Looks like he's already maxed out his potential as a republican, no?

Six of one, half dozen of the other, either the republicans create larger government requiring larger appropriations, or democrats raise taxes to give it away through social programs--either way we have to pay.

Is McGowen's office going to be open 24hrs so the 2AM drunks can have a voice also?
MrBigglesworth, Sweetwater - Jun 3, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Well Kevin I suppose if McGowen was a Democrat he would be trying to figure a way out to tax me more so I can pay for everyone else's meal.

Take the pork out? As a republican, he would become the pork...
Kevin, Oklahoma City - Jun 3, 2008 at 3:34 pm
What a waste. Good waiters are at a premium, offer better service and say thank you after you tip them. Oklahoma State legislators can be bought for a dime a dozen, think service is not official English, and growl at you if you don't raise their salaries every session. Please, please, don't give up your day job.

If he's a true republican he will take all of the "pork" off of the IHOP menu and out of state government!

Showing American pride...McGowen took out the name of "French" for the Crepes, Toast and Fries and exchanged it with Freedom on the menu. A true patriot.

McGowen's strength is his International experience. I will be looking forward to hearing about his foreign policy.
MrBigglesworth, Sweetwater - Jun 3, 2008 at 3:22 pm
If he wins, it will be considered a Grand Slam.
Chris, Oklahoma City - Jun 3, 2008 at 3:22 pm
McGowen...He may flip flop his pancakes...but not on his issues.
MrBigglesworth, Sweetwater - Jun 3, 2008 at 3:13 pm
Do you think he's scrambling to raise funds?
myers, Peir - Jun 3, 2008 at 3:11 pm
I guess I know who will be catering his watch party....
MrBigglesworth, Sweetwater - Jun 3, 2008 at 3:10 pm
This guy seems decent, but as I Moore resident I can attest to the fact that Wesselhoft has done a pretty good job. Wait until Wesselhoft is out of office and then run dude!
