NORMAL, Ill. (AP) — A central Illinois college is studying how many birds and bats are being killed by the school's wind turbine.

The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reports ( Heartland Community College in Normal will complete the study later this year.

A U.S. Department of Energy grant that paid for the turbine in 2010 was contingent on the college doing a study of bird and bat deaths during their fall migration seasons.

Heartland President Rob Widmer says the college tried to do a study last fall, but couldn't complete it because a malfunction shut down the turbine.

The college's environmental consultant has contracted with Milliken University to conduct the study.

Officials say if the turbine is killing too many birds and bats, they will consider ways to address the problem.
