CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Illinois officials say running back Rashard Mendenhall will be among six former players who will be honorary coaches at Saturday's spring game.

Mendenhall was a first-round draft pick in 2008 after setting school records that included rushing yards in a season and all-purpose yards

But the Skokie native said that year that he would be reluctant to support Illinois football over grievances with then-head coach Ron Zook.

Current head coach Tim Beckman said earlier this week that he hoped to have Mendenhall back after spending time with him at Arizona Cardinals workouts in May.

Mendenhall retired a short time later after six NFL seasons in Pittsburgh and Arizona.

Other guest coaches at Saturday's game will be Juice Williams, Dana Howard, Dino Pollock, Eric Rouse and Tim Simpson.
