Barbara Bush doing better
HOUSTON — A Houston hospital says former first lady Barbara Bush is in good condition and recovering from ulcer surgery as expected. Bush, 83, was hospitalized a week ago for abdominal pains and underwent surgery to repair a perforated ulcer Nov. 25. She’s expected to remain in the hospital for several more days. During the surgery, doctors closed a nearly 1.5-centimeter hole caused by an ulcer.

Climber dies in California
REDDING, Calif. — A 33-year-old-woman died while ascending California’s Mount Shasta with other climbers who tried to help. A sheriff’s spokeswoman said the woman slipped and fell 600 feet to 1,500 feet while climbing Friday with two men.

Birmingham’s mayor released
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The mayor of Alabama’s largest city, Larry Langford, was released on bail after being arrested Monday on charges of steering millions of dollars of bond work to a friend in exchange for more than $230,000 in bribes that paid his debts for flashy clothes, jewelry and Rolex watches.
Fighting dogs confiscated
LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles police say they have made two arrests and rescued 17 dogs in the breakup of a dogfighting operation. Police say the dogfighting outfit was a major player in the illegal training and breeding of animals for fighting. Of the 17 dogs, many were scarred and injured.
