Rotary club recognizes two Norman students’ achievements

Two Norman students have been recognized by the Norman Rotary Club for their achievements both in and out of the classroom.

Rebecca Anne Holliman and Ariana Nasim Azimi have been selected as November’s Students of the Month by club members.

The award recognizes outstanding seniors in the Norman School District. Students selected throughout each school year compete for two $1,000 college scholarships awarded by the Norman Rotary Club each spring.

Holliman, a senior at Norman North High School, serves as a teacher and director of community services with Friends Along the Path. The nonprofit, nondenominational organization offers free meditation classes and outreach service activities.

She also is president of the National Forensics League at Norman North, squad leader of the school’s debate team, and editorials editor at the Norman North newspaper. She is a member of Teen Volunteers of Norman, volunteers for the district attorney’s office, and volunteers with the area Democratic Party. Her parents are Carol and Terry Holliman.

Azimi, a senior at Norman High School, has volunteered for the past seven years with the Oklahoma Children’s Cancer Association. She is chair of the clinic parties committee for children at the Jimmy Everest Cancer Center at Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City.

She also is a member of the Teen Advisors of Norman, and she serves as a volunteer for Sooner Theatre, Meals on Wheels, the Norman Public Library and Safety Town. At school, she is a member of the varsity pom squad and co-captain of the school’s show choir. She recently was accepted to the Quartz Mountain Summer Arts Institute and has been appointed as an ambassador for the institute. Her parents are Mehdi and Carol Azimi.

Library sets video game night

A video game night for adults is from 5 to 8 p.m. Nov. 21 at Norman Public Library, 225 N Webster.

The come-and-go event, for ages 18 and older, will give adults the opportunity to play some of the video games popular with today’s youth.

The games will include "Dance Dance Revolution,” "Guitar Hero III,” "Guitar Hero: Aerosmith,” "Call of Duty 4” and "Rock Band 1.” People will need to show a library card and personal identification to get in.

oklahoma city zoo

Admission to zoo is free Mondays

Admission to the Oklahoma City Zoo is free Mondays during December, January and February. Also, zoo visitors in December can earn $1 admission by bringing an edible wildlife ornament. The ornaments will be put up throughout the zoo for native animals in the area. For more information, call 424-3344 or go to www.okczoo.com.

Nature film screenings set

The film "America’s Lost Landscape: The Tallgrass Prairie” will be screened at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 9 and Jan. 15 in the Rosser Conservation Education Center auditorium at the Oklahoma City Zoo. The film was created by The Nature Conservancy at the zoo. The screenings are free. Park and enter through the education center at the east end of the zoo parking lot. Santa making a visit Dec. 15

Santa will visit the Oklahoma City Zoo from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Dec. 15 in the Canopy Restaurant. The visit is free with zoo admission, and free hot chocolate and donuts will be available. For more information, call 424-3344 or go to www.okczoo.com.
