Slaying case judge named

Greer County Associate District Judge Danny Deaver will preside over the first-degree murder case against Ricky Gallegos, Jade Burns and Kelsey Campbell. The three are accused in the April beating death of 81-year-old Johnny Tharp. All three Comanche County judges recused themselves because the victim’s son-in-law practices law in southwestern Oklahoma.

Deadly fire pinpointed

A Nowata house fire that killed two men early Sunday likely started with an ember thrown into a kitchen trash basket. Robert Lee Peace Jr. and John Breshears died in the fire while two women escaped. Agent Donny Howard with the state fire marshal’s office said the fire began in the trash several hours after people had been in the home.
