IN BRIEF: Changes set for Tulsa swimmers

Changes set for swimmers
Only seven of the city of Tulsa’s 22 swimming pools will be open next summer, and customers will have to pay a $2 admission fee that had been dropped in recent years. As reasons, city officials cited cost constraints and difficulty finding an adequate number of lifeguards to work at the pools. Last year, the city opened 10 pools, which reported a total of 66,727 swimmers. A recent audit of 19 of the city’s pools indicated $10.7 million in basic repairs are needed and it would cost $20 million to bring pools up to current standards.
The state Department of Public Safety has produced a new supply of driver’s manuals it plans to distribute beginning Dec. 15. Driver’s examination offices, tag agents and operators of driving schools ran out of the manuals during the summer. The agency initially said it couldn’t afford to reprint the manuals, and officials encouraged the public to access them at the agency’s Web site, but state driver’s license examining Director Karen Gentry said the agency realized this would create a hardship.

Skating rink to open today
One day later than originally planned, an outdoor ice skating rink will open in downtown Tulsa. Officials who organize Tulsa’s Winterfest activities had wanted the Arvest Outdoor Ice Rink to open Friday. But warm, rainy weather on Thursday night scuttled those plans. Now, the rink will open at 4 p.m. today. It is next to BOK Center and will be open daily through Dec. 31.
