Norman walk focuses on cancer

The fifth annual Garden Walk for Pancreatic Cancer is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday at the gardens of the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Dr. Shubham Pant, an OU Cancer Institute medical oncologist, will speak about new treatment strategies and innovative clinical trials. Registration for the free event is 8:30 a.m. at the Stanton L. Young Biomedical Research Center, 975 NE 10.

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the U.S., with 35,240 deaths each year and 42,470 new cases diagnosed each year, according to the OU Cancer Institute. Actor Patrick Swayze recently died from the disease.

Seventy-five percent of patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer will die within 12 months of diagnosis, according to the institute. Five percent will survive for five years. The median survival time following diagnosis is six months.
