As an Oklahoma beekeeper, I found “Bee swarm is destroyed at Putnam City school” (News, April 26) disconcerting. I've captured many swarms in Oklahoma County and not a single one was Africanized bees. I disagree with the statement that if a swarm is found to call an exterminator. The obvious person to call would be a beekeeper, most of whom will remove the swarm for free.
Lists of beekeepers are available, including on the websites for the state Department of Agriculture and the Oklahoma Beekeepers Association. With the decline of these important pollinators, we should do all we can to protect them.
