In lab, Edmond foresees windfall

EDMOND — The Edmond Economic Development Authority estimates the new Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation Forensic Science Center will have an initial $44 million impact on the city.

Janet Yowell, Edmond's economic development director, said $40 million of the impact came during the two-year construction of the 86,000-square-foot building.

More than $4 million a year is expected be generated directly by the OSBI and surrounding businesses, Yowell said.

Of the $4 million, Yowell said, an estimated $3 million will come in personal income. That includes local and state taxes from revenue, personal income from OSBI employees and additional taxes paid by employees in consumer expenditures.

The four-story laboratory is now home to 70 criminalists, evidence technicians and support staff members.

Some of the employees have moved their families to Edmond.

"Whether they (OSBI employees) move to Edmond or not, they still need to run errands and get lunches,” Yowell said. "Combined with the UCO Forensic Science Institute and its cyber crime unit, this will bring more people and traffic.
