Increase in absences has Edmond schools step up prevention efforts
EDMOND — School absences have risen steadily in the Edmond School District during the past several weeks. Numbers released by the district show the number of illness-related absences has risen from less than 1 percent in August to more than 5 percent in mid-October.
The numbers refer to students who missed school with a fever of 100 degrees or higher as well as a sore throat and cough. The increase has prompted school officials to step up efforts to clean and sanitize their schools more frequently in the hopes of curbing the spread of illness. Associate Superintendent Bret Towne said the Oklahoma County Health Department is monitoring the number of school absences and working with the district to make sure that illnesses do not become a bigger problem. Teachers have been instructed to wipe down their students' desks at the end of each day and commons areas in the schools are cleaned several times a day. The district has also entered into a contract with a local temp agency to provide janitors to ensure that the cleaning staffs at the school remain at full strength should the school's staff become ill.
