INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana first lady Karen Pence underwent surgery to remove her gallbladder on Thursday and is expected to make a full recovery, the governor's office said.

The 56-year-old Pence had the operation at an outpatient surgery center in Indianapolis after she began experiencing abdominal pain on Wednesday and went to an emergency room, where doctors discovered the gallbladder problem. The wife of Gov. Mike Pence expects to recuperate at home and resume her scheduled activities sometime next week, the governor's office said.

"Karen and I are both grateful for the prayers and concern expressed by so many Hoosiers over the past 24 hours and for the professionalism of the medical personnel who diagnosed and performed her surgery," the governor said in a statement.

The governor canceled a planned Thursday trip to southern Indiana for events in Jeffersonville and Evansville.

Pence, who took office Jan. 14, decided to give a scheduled speech at a Greater Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce dinner Thursday night. He is scheduled to travel Friday to events in Lafayette, Valparaiso and Merrillville.

The Pences have been married since 1985 and have three grown children.
