Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Andrew Rice says he'd support a financial industry bailout plan only if it included meaningful oversight, protection for taxpayers and limits on executive compensation.

Rice and Republican Sen. Jim Inhofe reacted to President Bush's speech tonight in which he outlined the plan.

Rice, a first-term state senator from Oklahoma City, says there's got to be some kind of punitive aspect to the plan to those who made reckless decisions.

Inhofe repeated earlier assertions that he will oppose Bush's plan unless it contains more accountability and oversight.

Inhofe says too many major questions remain regarding the details of the massive $700 billion bailout.

Rice and Inhofe will meet in the Nov. 4 general election.

There is a good, non-partisan article analyzing the causes of the economic meltdown here ... http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2008/03/26/7905/ ... This was written 6 months ago, but the guy has good info that is still relevant today. The author doesn't support Floyd R's assertion that Bill Clinton is somehow to blame. Excerpt: "The next president should tell the American people that 'the era of unregulated so-called free-market banking greed and sleaze is over.'"

Inhofe is bailing out Wall Street Fat Cats with their billion dollar bonuses, mansions, and yachts.

Inhofe bailing out Wall Street Fat Cats. I guess he doesn't want to be re-elected.

Last time I looked there had been a Bush in the White House the past 8 years. To blame this on Clinton is just nuts. Let's let Congress address this this week, then plan on voting out all the incumbents in November, shall we?

I too am against the bailout. First, I do not see any CEOs being held accountable for their institutions' lending practices. I realise the government was pushing for these loans to encourage home ownership by the economically disadvantaged, but the lenders should have drawn a line: home ownership is not a constitutional right, and some people should have never been approved. Secondly, this bailout gets the government involved in the banking industry, which will put America on a path toward socialism. More often than not, when the government gets its hands into something, the end product is mediocre and it causes abridgements of our personal freedom.

Michael, you obviously don't even know what the crisis is all about! Over the last 15 years, liberal policies have required banks to give too much money to people who coulcn't afford to pay it back. When they found out their homes weren't worth any where near what their mortgages where, they stopped paying for them. All because your hero, Billy Clinton, and his cronies wanted to buy votes. That's your Clinton economy right there. W's people should have tried to stop it much earlier, and when they did, they made an even bigger mess of it. Inhofe had nothing to do with it, though it would have been nice if he had raised an alarm. NO BAILOUT!

Inhofe and his party helped cause this mess we are in and they have had the power for the past EIGHT years to avoid this huge mess. Inhofe spends most of his time trying to scare Oklahomans with pictures of two dudes on top of a wedding cake - he thinks that if he distracts us from the huge financial mess that we are in that we will jsut forget about it. Dont fall for this crap Oklahoma, we are smarter than this. The republicans have been in control of the White House for the past EIGHT years and they have contolled the congress for SIX of the past eight years. As the sign on a former President's desk said - "The Buck Stops Here"! Republicans have been in control for EIGHT years and we are watching our economy crumble before our very eyes. Inhofe has been in congress for over 22 years and hea has held some sort of government job for over 30 years - he is a career politician and nothing more. He has no idea what the common man delas with every day and he is certainly out of touch. Vote for real change in Novemeber, vote for Andrew Rice - our children and our wallets deserve nothing less.
