Sen. Jim Inhofe to fight mandates at U.N. climate conference

WASHINGTON — Sen. Jim Inhofe, a leading skeptic in Congress about global warming, said Wednesday that he plans to attend the United Nations climate conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, in December to argue against mandated reductions in carbon emissions.

The Oklahoma Republican said he plans to tell leaders of countries gathered at the conference that Americans don’t support costly measures to reduce carbon emissions when countries such as China won’t be held to binding limits on their emissions.

Wednesday, President Barack Obama addressed the United Nations about global warming but offered no specifics about how an international treaty could be reached in advance of the Copenhagen conference, scheduled to take place Dec. 7-18.

Inhofe said scientists who don’t believe human activity is leading to rising world temperatures are having trouble getting a room at the Copenhagen conference so they can present their views.

"The problem is they rig up everything,” he said. "You can’t get a room unless you’re singing their song.”

Inhofe attended a United Nations climate change conference in 2003 in Milan, Italy.

The House this year passed legislation that would mandate limits on carbon emissions and use a cap-and-trade system to enforce the limits. The Senate has not taken action on a bill, but Inhofe said he expects legislation to clear the Environment and Public Works Committee before the Copenhagen conference. Inhofe is the top Republican on the committee and opposes the legislation.
