Iowa State beats Texas 82-62

Freshman Georges Niang scored a season-high 18 points on just seven shots, Will Clyburn added 16 points and Iowa State rolled past Texas 82-62 Saturday in its Big 12 home opener.

Tyrus McGee had 15 points off the bench for the Cyclones (11-4, 1-1 Big 12), who bounced back from a heartbreaking loss at No. 6 Kansas by pounding the struggling Longhorns (8-8, 0-3).

Iowa State committed a season-low five turnovers and hit 11 3s against a Texas team that entered play ranked first in the nation in 3-point and overall field goal percentage defense.

"I don't know if I've gotten the Kansas game out of my system. I don't know if I'll ever get that game out of my system," Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg said. "Our guys had so much resolve. ... They lifted us up as a staff because of the way they came with their approach."

Jonathan Holmes and Julien Lewis each had 15 points to lead the Longhorns, whose own resolve was question by coach Rick Barnes.

Texas star Sheldon McClellan, the team's leading scorer at 15.2 points per game, was given just one minute as part of Barnes's plan to send a message to his scuffling team.

"We've got to get every guy on our team understanding how hard you've got to play consistently every single day," Texas coach Rick Barnes when asked why McClellan barely played. "We're asking guys just to do the fundamental things correctly."

Iowa State suffered perhaps its toughest defeat yet under Hoiberg in the league opener on Wednesday night. Jayhawks star Ben McLemore banked in a 3-pointer just before the regulation buzzer and Kansas, despite being outplayed by the Cyclones, eventually pulled away in overtime 97-89.

The Cyclones didn't let that loss affect them on Saturday.

The Longhorns made the occasional run at the Cyclones after falling behind by as much as 13 late in the first half. They got as close as 65-58 before Clyburn and Babb got free for wide-open 3s that gave Iowa State a 71-58 lead with 5:47 left.
