Also Sunday, paramilitary troops patrolled the streets of Pakistan’s largest city, Karachi, following fighting between ethnic and political gangs that left 16 people dead.

Pakistan is undergoing a surge in attacks by Islamist militants based in the wild, tribal regions in the northwest, from where they also stage attacks on Western troops in neighboring Afghanistan.

Militants in Bannu town attacked a security post, killing three officers. Two of the attackers also died.
