It's a mixed bag for Oklahoma's nonprofits

Curry started shopping there years ago to get inexpensive clothes for work. She was recently laid off and is glad she’s in the habit of shopping there. She’s not the only one.

The thrift stores have "definitely gotten busier,” she said. "The economy — everyone is trying to save some money.”

Goodwill Industries is one of the rare cases of a nonprofit agency doing well during the recession. The Tulsa branch operates nine stores in eastern Oklahoma, including three in Tulsa and one each in Broken Arrow and Owasso.

"When you’re in a recession, people look for alternatives to stretch their budget. It just makes sense for people to go to a place where they can get a bigger bang for their buck,” said Nancy Webster, Goodwill community relations director.

Stores are stocked with donations of clothing, furniture, appliances and housewares. Last year, 17.7 million pounds of items were donated to Goodwill, a slight increase from the previous year, and the stores made $9 million toward the agency’s job training program.
