OU football: It’s a revealing week for Sooners

NORMAN — Next season, Oklahoma could be a team that challenges for the Big 12 title and BCS National Championship.

Or, it could be a team that resembles the 2005 Sooners, which underwent a rebuilding phase after losing numerous starters.

This week will be revealing about which team OU fields in 2009.

Thursday is the deadline for underclassmen to declare for April’s NFL Draft, and several key OU underclassmen will spend the next few days deciding whether to return to Norman for another season or leave early for the draft.

No decision will be more significant than that of quarterback Sam Bradford, who is considered by most draft analysts to be one of the top two quarterbacks eligible for the draft and a potential top-10 pick.

Even though he’s a sophomore, Bradford is draft eligible because he is three years removed from high school.

If Bradford returns, he’ll have to acclimate to an offensive line that will be replacing at least four starters as well as a receiving rotation decimated by graduation that only returns Ryan Broyles.

There is a possibility Bradford might have a new quarterbacks coach, too.

The Minnesota Star Tribune and St. Paul Pioneer Press are reporting that Sooner quarterbacks coach Josh Heupel is a leading candidate for the job of offensive coordinator at the University of Minnesota.

Heupel was raised in Aberdeen, S.D. — 275 miles from Minneapolis — and growing up was a fan of the Golden Gophers.

Minnesota head coach Tim Brewster is expected to name an offensive coordinator this week.

Bradford and perhaps Heupel, however, aren’t the only ones with decisions to make.

Junior tight end Jermaine Gresham, OU’s MVP in the national title game, said he was told by the NFL advisory committee that he projects as a first-rounder in the upcoming draft.

Gresham, who finished with 14 touchdowns this season, said Thursday night he will make a decision after discussing his options with his family.

All-American defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, a third-year sophomore, hasn’t revealed his draft projection, but many draft analysts believe McCoy could be a first-round selection, too.

Junior right tackle Trent Williams, the only underclassman on the Sooner offensive line this season, said he received a second-round projection and that he will also consider the draft. If Williams comes back for his senior year, he will probably be moved to left tackle to anchor an inexperienced offensive line.

Running back DeMarco Murray, a third-year sophomore, and junior defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger are also eligible for the draft. Both are recovering from surgery, however, and are likely to return to school.

Several other Sooners are draft eligible, including running back Chris Brown, tight end Brody Eldridge, defensive ends Jeremy Beal and Auston English, linebacker Keenan Clayton and cornerbacks Dominique Franks and Brian Jackson.

But all are expected back in Norman next season.

Hey craig, I reported your threat to 'beat the dog crap' out of people as inappropriate. Mostly because it was a weak comeback, also because of the suggestion of animal cruelty....and also because of pure stupidity! 8:34 pm CST craig, Oklahoma City, and OU still sucks!
James, Memphis - Jan 12, 2009 at 8:35 pm
I agree Greg, Sam put the ball where it needed to be. OU receivers seemed to have problems getting seperation from the Florida DBs. I thought the short passing game was there for the taking. OU might have been able to dink and dunk its way down the field. OU only seemed to go that route when it was like 3rd and 12.
Richard, Visalia - Jan 12, 2009 at 1:59 pm
I would hardly say Bradford was a bust..Both interceptions hit his receivers right in the hands. He also lost another 30 yard reception due to a penalty, and he threw 2 other dropped passes that were dropped in perfectly. I give a lot of credit to Florida's DB's. I thought they challenged our receivers physically and wore our receivers down. Congrats OU on a great season and congrats to Florida for a National Championship season. Also props to TX in their Fiesta Bowl victory.

I just discovered the 'ignore' button. Hit it and forever you don't have to even waste your time reading all the nonsense from a few of these recurring jerks. A week of this and I can sit and read only the intelligent commentary available.

I blame the offensive play calling as well. 3rd,4th and goal...Qb sneak. Why would anyone not try this. The defense stepped up,that prolific O,choked.

Kevin, you have no idea what you are talking about. We had the mose prolific scoring offense in college football history and we were defeated by a very good Florida team. So blaming it on the offensive coordinator is plain stupid. As for the defense, Venebles has done a good job. we just need the to bring in stronger defensive players. As for bringing Mike Stoops back, apparently you don't know he just signed a 3 year extension at Arizona as a HEAD COACH. Do you really think he wants to come back. What are you 12 ?
Richard, San Antonio - Jan 12, 2009 at 8:41 am
If Stoops wants to win a National Championship bowl he needs to get new coordinators, offense and defense! Let Heupel call the plays and mix up the defense you can't stick with the traditional stuff because it's not working for the Sooners! Make Bradford run the damn ball sometimes, it's football he's going to get hit! TRUST ME WHEN I SAID THIS AGAIN, "GET RID OF THEM SORRY COORDINATORS THEIR WACK", when Stoops realizes that the Sooners will win big bowl games! Get Mike Stoops back down here! I'm tired of being disappointed every year, it's ridiculous!

Folks, do you realize nobody reads those long winded manifestos??? They may even make sense but nobody will read it....Shorten it up and I will read it....But I am an okie, I need short stories and shorter words.....

Yeah Jill www., you just remember the very words that you post! No more spouting off history and statistics because as you say it means nothing to anyone but "hollow crowns". That being the case Ou will be remembered for their usual easy ticket through the big 12 north title wins for the big ticket year after year only to lose AGAIN! 100% WILL REMEMBER THAT again and again going on 5 years now! Tim Tebow's record speaks for itself. How many Heisman nominations/wins and National Championship Titles are under Bradford? Tim(SUPERMAN)Tebow could play several positions in the NFL very well! Jill your knowledge of sports proves you an idiot. You troll around on the Thunder pages and now the college pages like you have a understanding of sports. Please spare these people of your stupidity.

SEC RULZ, Greenup - Jan 12, 2009 at 12:47 am
We got to keep Heupel. He is the best offensive mind on the staff. He should be calling the plays.

Let's see where Sam Bradford gets drafted in comparison to Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow. Tebow is a classic Heisman bust candidate: great player in college, but not as good an NFL prospect. He'd have come out this year if he'd been told teams would be interested in him as a quarterback.

Yes I am saying it is better to lose BCS bowl games or National Championship games than to win the Holiday bowl or the Cotton bowl...do not like it? Go suck yourself.

Oh yea, when a team like OU plays country back woods welding teams..it's no wonder they look good. So maybe OU should start off playing real teams. It's whatever right...GO LONGHORNS

What does graduation rate have to do with playing football? That is an OSU statement.... People go to college to learn to make money. A football player being drafted before he graduates is a millionaire overnight. He has learned how to make money early. So what is your point. Should he stay in school and lose millions? Makes no sense does it, unless you are a dumb ass Aggie or the lowest form of human life, commonly known as a Texan....
UnSub, Yukon - Jan 11, 2009 at 7:14 pm
my friends and i have come up with a new twist to the bcs standings. 50% of score will be based on graduation rate, if the graduation rate is under 75% the school would get a zero. now that is a better way than allowing schools to make money and pay their coaches 6mil or so without graduating their players
richard, oklahoma city - Jan 11, 2009 at 6:07 pm
So, did Boob Stoops ever come out w/a news conference to talk about the loss? Probably not. He's probably too busy making interview appointments and airline reservations to get outta town.

"OU is ranked behind Texas in the 2009 AP and Coaches Poll. Some OU fans are truly idiots and living in a fantasy world." Guess how much that's worth......about as much as the preseason ranking, because 90% of the people in the US have no idea where either team is ranked today, and in a week, it'll be up to 99%. The bottom line is that neither team won the national championship, and both got a runner-up equivalent. Texas can show off their Fiesta Bowl trophy, which means they won one game, and OU can show off their Big Twelve Championship Trophy, which means the same. Florida's got the only hardware anyone outside of Oklahoma and Texas cares about, and in a couple of years, no one but sports fans will remember even that. So, enjoy the fact that you're ranked above OU, but it's a rather hollow crown.

Gents, answer this question. Stoops' only National Title came with mostly Blake's players. Bob brought in Josh (great QB), but the game was won on defense (13-2). Aren't you all worried Bob just can't win the big one!
