Guard Jack Taylor of Division III Grinnell (Iowa) College scored an NCAA record 138 points Tuesday night, and the NBA's top scorers reacted in awe.
“Wow. That's impressive. That's crazy. I don't care what level you're at. Scoring 138 points is pretty insane,” Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant said.
Bryant theorized Taylor must have been wearing Bryant's signature “Black Mamba” shoes. “Only Mambas have no conscience to shoot the ball that much,” Bryant joked.
Reigning MVP LeBron James: “I watched Kobe's game when he had 81. I watched some of the greatest games ever played when guys scored big numbers. There's two games that I would love to see. One was Wilt (Chamberlain), when he had 100. And this kid, I want to see him, too. Sir Jack.”
Three-time defending scoring champ Kevin Durant shook his head and smiled when asked about Taylor's performance before Wednesday night's contest against the Los Angeles Clippers at Chesapeake Energy Arena.
“That's crazy,” Durant said. “My motto is ‘Shoot till your arm falls off, man.' If you start off hot, you've got to keep shootin'. That's crazy to see him score 138 because college teams don't even score 100 points. That's good for him.”
Taylor shot 52 for 108 (.482) from the field, 27 for 71 (.380) from the 3-point range and had zero assists.
“Man, he's going to have to get Tommy John (surgery) after that,” Durant said with a smile.
Durant's NBA high is 51 points against Denver last February. He also scored 66 in a game at Harlem's Rucker Park in the summer of 2011. “Yeah, but I don't count that,” Durant said. “I probably shot 60 times that game. I couldn't even fathom taking 100 shots. You've got applaud that, man. That was unbelievable.”
