The Oklahoman's Jason Kersey took questions from readers in today's OU Power Lunch Chat. Join our Power Lunch Chats Monday-Friday at 11 a.m. on NewsOK.com/Sports. Here's a recap of today's chat.
OU lost the battle for another big time recruit yesterday when a DT chose to go to A&M. Do you think this trend in the recruiting battles is starting to impact OU on the field?
People from Barry Switzer on down have said the team lacks the talent it once had, and it's hard to argue that. OU definitely needs some help on the defensive line. I also don't think the sky is falling, either.
Do you think Gundy needs to change Bill Young out for a fresh DC or just change Bill Young's defensive mindset?
No, I don't think Bill Young needs to be fired. OSU's defense wasn't unlike just about any defense in the conference. I think the problem with Big 12 defenses goes way beyond OSU. Firing Bill Young wouldn't do anything but set OSU back with another new d-coordinator.
OU had so few players on the All-Big 12 team and still tied for conference championship. Is it fair to say that the coaching was better than most other Big 12 teams?
I do think Oklahoma's coaches did an excellent job this season, especially the offensive line coaches (James Patton and Bruce Kittle). People question their recruiting, and maybe that's fair, but the job those guys did in coaching up the banged up o-line was exceptional.
If you were at the OU game last night, how sad was the arena when Whitney went down? Pretty heartbreaking watching it on TV. Probably one of the better student athletes OU has ever had.
It was heartbreaking. No other way to describe it. Whitney Hand has been a first-class representative of the university, a good player and a fan favorite, and you just hate to see a player like that have her career end in such a sad way.
When will the tight ends resurface at OU?
I think Brannon Green showed flashes of potential and could be a bigger factor next season. Also, Taylor McNamara didn't really get a chance to show much of what he's got before he got hurt, so maybe he emerges next season.
