The Oklahoman's Jason Kersey took questions from readers in today's OU Power Lunch Chat. Join our Power Lunch Chats Monday-Friday at 11 a.m. on NewsOK.com/Sports. Here's a recap of today's Q&A:
Who are some people who are standing out in spring practices at OU?
Lots has been said about the new defensive backs, like true freshman safety Ahmad Thomas and sophomore corner Cortez Johnson. Johnson transferred from Arizona last year and sat the 2012 season out, but apparently is really impressing. Mike Stoops said he's working as a starter at CB right now.
What is the D.J. Ward situation with the NCAA? Is it impermissible benefits? I don't understand how he can be admitted into OU and taking classes, but not cleared by NCAA academically.
My understanding is that the NCAA is still reviewing his high school transcripts, because he transferred from Lawton to Douglass, then to Southmoore, and then graduated early. It should all be worked out soon.
Who will start at running back next season?
Damien Williams, there's very little doubt about that. Brennan Clay will definitely be in position to earn significant carries, and Alex Ross will probably get some, too, but Williams will still be the main guy.
Is Blake Bell still the favorite at quarterback?
Yes, I think he is, although it still sounds like Trevor Knight and Kendal Thompson are performing well in practices and will continue to push Blake. But at this point, I still think Blake is the favorite to start the season opener.
Do the OU women have a chance against Tennessee?
I think OU definitely has a chance against Tennessee, especially considering the game is in OKC. I would still call OU the underdog, but the game is certainly winnable. If OU wins, though, and reaches the Elite 8, I don't see any way they get past Baylor.
