The Oklahoman's Jason Kersey took questions from readers in today's OU Power Lunch Chat. Below is a complete transcript of the chat.
Do you see a need for panic after the performance of the Sooners against UTEP?
Panic? That depends on what the expectations were for this season. If you thought this was a national championship caliber team, then yes I'd say so.
However, I think they are still capable of winning the Big 12 if things fall into the right place. They've struggled in openers vs. mid majors before, so it isn't like this is unprecedented
Do you see a need for the veteran guys to come back or do you think OU is ok with the players they have? Do you see OU using more of the up-tempo against Florida A&M?
As far as receivers go, no I see no urgent need for Jaz Reynolds to return right now. The receivers OU has, even though they may have been disappointing Saturday, are talented enough that they will be fine. On the defensive line, though, yes they need Casey Walker and Stacy McGee back. And I think they will turn the tempo up offensively this week.
Who do you have in the Georgia-Mizzou game?
Georgia, and I haven't nailed down a score yet
Is Roy Finch in Bob Stoops’ doghouse or is it a case of not performing in practice? It’s not a question of talent.
No, you're right he certainly is talented. I think he isn't doing some of the things in practice he needs to do to earn that playing time, but I also just think he is the victim of something that happens: other people are just better. Stills and Shepard in the slot, and Whaley and Williams in the backfield
With Stoops barking at the media, and all the suspensions and defections this last year, do you think Bob is enjoying the rigors of coaching as much? Do you see him quitting any time soon? He constantly says that he isn't going to do this forever.
Well he has never been particularly cheerful with the media, so I wouldn't take that as a sign of anything. No, I don't see any sign of that. I guess anything is possible, but I do think he will be coach at OU for a while longer. I just don't see him going anywhere anytime soon
What can be done about the O line?
I think the o line needs more experience and more time working together. I have no idea if this is a group that is capable of greatness, but I do think they can play better than they did. After rewatching the game, I have toned down some of my criticism of the line. I still don't think Landry was even close to being the biggest problem but he probably could've gotten some of those passes off quicker. The line showed some good ability Saturday so we will just have to see
Any update on the return of Casey Walker and/or Stacy McGee? What about the other suspended players?
The only previously suspended player I have an update on is, obviously, TE Geneo Grissom. He will be back after missing the opener. No update on any other suspended player, but I did talk to Casey Walker's mom last night and she said he will be back soon.
Your overall thoughts on OU's performance against UTEP, and, how do you see them down the road?
After Saturday, it is tough for me to see this team being Big 12 champion. I think all of the sudden several games that seemed like definite wins now are shaky: at Tech, Kansas State and Oklahoma State are the three that I would've said OU definitely wins, but now I'd say will be much tougher than I thought. Also, if they went blow for blow in a defensive struggle with. UTEP, I think the Texas game all of the sudden seems very up in the air. With that defense the Longhorns have, if both offenses struggle that one could easily end up beooming a 21-17 or 17-14 loss for the Sooners
I enjoy your film study blog. Very informational.
Thanks! I hope to have that posted each week on Sunday evening or Monday morning going forward
Bob Stoops has seemed very unmotivating for several seasons. Am I wrong? Stoops also, to me, seems like he has a chip on his shoulder when talking to the press. Any thoughts?
I don't know, because I would assume he acts differently when he's with the team than he does with the media
What’s the future with Blake Bell? Does OU’s offense change to more zone read if and when he becomes OU’s QB? He's great as the Belldozer, is he the next OU QB after Landry Jones?
I do not believe the offense will change much with Blake Bell next season. Remember, he was recruited as a passing QB and he has a great arm that no one has ever really gotten to see beyond the spring game. They may tweak things a little, but I wouldn't expect any major changes in the offense with Bell at QB
With Tom Wort's comment that fans don't understand a gap defense, do you stand by your comments that he "didn't look sharp"?
After rewatching the game, I think Wort played better as the game went on. But at the beginning of the game, he didn't look great. I think everyone has room for improvement on that team, Wort included. Maybe the defense was one that didn't require him to do much, but anytime you give up that many rushing yards to UTEP, it is tough to not view the middle linebacker as at least partially responsible.
