JAY Arthur Monroe Hevel, 17, pleaded guilty Wednesday to the shotgun slaying of his stepgrandmother, and was sentenced to 10 years to life in prison.
In a plea agreement with District Attorney Jon Douthitt's office, Hevel pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of second-degree murder just before jury selection was to begin in his trial.
Delaware County District Judge Sam C. Fullerton III accepted Hevel's plea and imposed the sentence.
Hevel, who was 16 when arrested, was accused of killing Florence Downing, 78, whose body was found Nov. 6, 1988, in a blood-soaked bed at her mobile home near Jay.
Former Sheriff Bob Hughes said robbery and revenge may have been motives. Some $120 was missing from the woman's purse, Hughes said.
Downing was shot once in the heart, apparently while she slept. Two weeks earlier, she had ordered Hevel, his mother and brother to move from her house, Hughes said. BIOG: NAME:Archive ID: 377234
