NORMAN — Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks will be the headlining artist for the free, three-day Jazz in June festival June 19-21, organizers have announced.
Throughout his decades-long career, Hicks has combined elements of swing, jazz, folk and country with influences from Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Tom Waits and others to create a sound he refers to as “folk jazz.” Hicks describes his music as a blend that starts with a folk music sound and adds a jazz beat, solos and singing.
“It’s kind of light in nature. It’s not loud. In a way, it’s carefree,” Hicks says.
The band is slated to headline Jazz in June’s “Jazz in the Park” June 21 at Andrews Park, 201 W Daws St.
Kansas City blues singer and guitarist Samantha Fish, whose 2011 debut album “Runaway” was honored with the Blues Music Award, will bring her special blend of roadhouse blues to “Blues Under the Stars” June 19 at Brookhaven Village, 3700 W Robinson St.
The Charlie Hunter and Scott Amendola Duo, which pairs guitarist Hunter and drummer Amendola, is scheduled to headline “Jazz Under the Stars” June 20, also at Brookhaven Village. They have recorded five albums together, most recently 2013’s “Pucker,” which followed their critically acclaimed 2012 album “Not Getting Behind Is the New Getting Ahead.”
