m. OK, I'm going to insert a question from a friend on Twitter: What are the chances the USA team makes it out of the group stage?
Jenni Carlson 11:08 a.m. Yes, a World Cup question! Who else is fired up about WC? I am. Largely because it means live sports on daytime TV, but really, I'm just a big sucker for big-time sporting events, and it doesn't get much bigger than the WC. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:09 a.m. I think the US is 50-50 to get out of the group stage. Frankly, the opener against Ghana could be the decider. Win, and the chance of advancing goes way up. Lose, and the sledding is going to be super, super tough. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:09 a.m. That match is Monday. 5 p.m., I believe.
norman nick 11:09 a.m. why didn't you or anyone else in the sports department do a story on the OSU fans who poured rock salt on L. Dale Mitchell this year? OU had to re-sod part of the outfield. seems like something you guys would look into but I guess chose to ignore.
Jenni Carlson 11:10 a.m. I heard nothing about any rock salt. This is seriously the first I heard about it. If you all have news or tips, don't hesitate to call or email. We can't know about everything! :)
Guest 11:10 a.m. Is there a chance Fisher could come back and coach the Thunder in a few years. Getting ahead of myself lol.
Jenni Carlson 11:11 a.m. I suppose it's possible, but that seems unlikely. Either he's going to stumble in NYC and not be attractive to the Thunder, or he's going to excel and be really hard to hire away. Just my two cents.
Reggie 11:11 a.m. Knicks plotting Durant to NYC?
Jenni Carlson 11:12 a.m. Oh, I'm sure every team is trying to plot a way to get KD. But take a deep breath, there are lots of not-so-subtle things that KD keeps saying that might just mean he'll stay put. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:12 a.m. Did you hear some of the things he said in his MVP speech? "The grass is not always greener". "Us" when talking about Oklahomans and OKC. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:13 a.m. Don't take that stuff lightly. It isn't like it means he's a slam dunk to stay, but I also don't think he's for-sure gone like some folks.
Jenni Carlson 11:13 a.m. OK, another Twitter question: Which is bigger Super Bowl or the World Cup?
Jenni Carlson 11:14 a.m. Depends on where you are. In the U.S., the Super Bowl is still the bigger deal. I mean, it's practically a holiday. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:14 a.m. But in virtually every other country on the planet, the World Cup is clearly the bigger deal. So, I guess, overall that means the World Cup is the bigger deal. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:15 a.m. I have no problem with that. Soccer is an international phenomenon, the world's sport. It's biggest event should be the biggest sporting event on the planet.
Spoon 11:15 a.m. Now that D-Fish is the coach of the Knicks and Phil Jackson has indicated that they will not bring back point guard Raymond Felton will we see a Reggie Jackson Iman Shumpert trade? The Thunder could sign Beno Udrih or Patty Mills to fill the backup point guard slot.
Jenni Carlson 11:16 a.m. Apparently, there's been ongoing talk between the Thunder and Knicks about Shumpert, so that kind of thing isn't out of the realm of possibility. I will say this, though -- the Thunder isn't going to part ways with Reggie hastily. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:17 a.m. Reggie Jackson is a quintessential Thunder. Long. Athletic. Quick. Fast. Plus his personality is the Thunder personality. Guys like him are rare, so the Thunder isn't going to trade him unless it is a good, good deal.
mike gundy 11:17 a.m. I'm a man!
Jenni Carlson 11:17 a.m. And not at all original.
Guest 11:17 a.m. Who do you have winning Spurs-Heat? And could the Thunder have beaten the Heat?
Jenni Carlson 11:18 a.m. I picked the Spurs before the series started, and I'm sticking with that, but man, I would've liked to have seen the Spurs win both those games at home. That would've made me feel better about the Spurs' chances. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:18 a.m. Now, the Spurs are really going to have to get after it in Miami. Can they win a game or two there? Absolutely. But clearly, the road to a title is more difficult now. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:19 a.m. As for the Thunder's chances against the Heat, sure, the Thunder could've beat the Heat. Would've been an epic series like this Spurs-Heat series looks like it's going to be. Would've been great fun.
Mark 11:19 a.m. I wish Fish would have just stayed on as a Thunder coach. How can anyone be successful with the Knicks and their crappy leadership.
Jenni Carlson 11:20 a.m. Mark, here's something we were tossing around here at the office yesterday before the news came that Fish was going to the Knicks. Could the Thunder have offered to make him a player-coach? Would've required some fancy goings on with his contract, I suspect, but he might just have gone for it. Play and be an assistant. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:21 a.m. As for the Knicks, I agree that the track record is dreadful. Dolan is the root of the problem, but of course, he owns the team and isn't going anywhere near as anyone can tell. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:21 a.m. But there hasn't been anyone in the GM position quite like Phil Jackson in recent years either. I don't think Jackson is going to take any crap, so maybe that changes things. Heck, if the Clippers could get things turned around, surely the Knicks can.
Jenni Carlson 11:22 a.m. OK, another ? from Twitter: Can K-State beat Auburn?
Jenni Carlson 11:22 a.m. From futbol to football! ...
Jenni Carlson 11:23 a.m. By the way, K-State announced today that game vs. Auburn was a sellout, to which I say, "Geez, I'd hope so!" K-State hasn't had a marquee non-conference game like that in forever. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:24 a.m. As for beating Auburn, seems like that's going to be tough for the 'Cats. The Tigers return a good chunk of the squad that played for a national title last season. Is a K-State win possible? Sure, but that SEC size and speed will be tough for the Cats to contend with.
PBJ 11:24 a.m. I'm happy for Fish personally. I think he'll be a great coach. Who does Fisher remind you of when you've talked to him?
Jenni Carlson 11:25 a.m. Hmm, good question. Contrary to popular belief, there are a good number of thoughtful and intelligent athletes out there, but clearly, Fisher is among the upper crust of that group. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:26 a.m. He's like Shane Battier. Curtis Lofton also comes to mind. Brandon Weeden. Zac Robinson. Nate Hybl. Geez, now that I'm thinking about it, I'm lucky to have gotten to cross paths with some good guys.
Guest 11:26 a.m. Best Fisher momemt?
Jenni Carlson 11:27 a.m. Hmm, another interesting question. I'm not sure what context we're talking about. Best moment for the Thunder probably came in '12. He hit some big-time shots during that playoff run. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:27 a.m. In his career? That shot with .4 against San Antonio would be hard to beat. The Spurs fans still remember and will always hate him for it.
Guest 11:27 a.m. Who gets fired first? Scott Brooks of Derek Fisher?
Jenni Carlson 11:28 a.m. Geez, one dude just got hired, the other just led his team to the WC Finals, and you're talking about firing them! ...
Jenni Carlson 11:28 a.m. Sigh. I really don't know. Way too many variables, especially considering we haven't even seen Fisher coach one game. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:29 a.m. I'm going to refuse to answer this question. I get to that, right? One pass per live chat? Let's make that a new rule!
Guest 11:29 a.m. What about Rip Hamilton?
Jenni Carlson 11:30 a.m. I seriously would have to double check if he's still in the league. I assume he is. I'm sure he is. But if I had to bet my house on who he plays for, I would lose the house. No idea. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:30 a.m. But someone like him, yes, yes, yes. Absolutely the kind of guy who would be great for the Thunder.
Jenni Carlson 11:31 a.m. This just in: Hamilton didn't play this last season. So, he's available!!! ;)
MartzMimic 11:31 a.m. Nice column today. Next season will be KD's eighth and Russell's seventh. At what point do they become the veteran presence?
Jenni Carlson 11:32 a.m. Thanks, MM! A great point. I think they are becoming that, but having those really veteran "consummate professional" types never hurts. I mean, think of all the things that Fisher brought to the locker room because of what he'd experienced in 18 seasons. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:33 a.m. There's something that comes with 12, 13, 14 years in the league that can't be replicated any other way than with time. Plus, I think having a Fisher type in the locker room helps to take some of the leadership pressure off KD and RW. It will always be part of their job, as it should be, but it's a help to them to have Fish, Collison, Perk, guys like that.
Spoon 11:33 a.m. Brooks changed his skin this year and was much more flexible with his rotation. Any chance he grows again this offseason and develops a more structured offense?
Jenni Carlson 11:33 a.m. Another great point! You guys are rockin' it today! ...
Jenni Carlson 11:35 a.m. I think it's safe to say that Scott Brooks is still growing as a head coach. No reason to think he won't continue that. And yes, I believe the offensive structure is one area where he could continue to evolve. You still want to have an offense where the creativity of KD, RW and Reggie can be used but that doesn't get too focused on a two-man game or hero ball. More movement. More flow. More trust. All would be good next season.
Jenni Carlson 11:36 a.m. OK, I hate to cut things off, but I've got to make some phone calls. This has been tons of fun. Be sure to join Thunder guru Darnell Mayberry for tomorrow's Power Lunch. You won't want to miss it!
