NewsOK Sports 9:54 a.m. So, how about that Reggie Jackson? We're chatting Thunder and more on the Power Lunch chat at 11. Get you questions in here and Jenni Carlson will be in later to start the conversation.
Jenni Carlson 10:09 a.m. Hey, all! Get those questions in now, and we'll start chatting at 11 a.m. We can talk Thunder or Donald Sterling or football or baseball or hockey or whatever. You get to choose!
Guest 11:00 a.m. Should players be aloud to have a meeting with officials before a game to ask for special treatment in their playing style?
Jenni Carlson 11:00 a.m. Oh, hey, time to start!
Jenni Carlson 11:01 a.m. Well, I don't know that there should be a rule against it or anything. Officials in the NBA have a good working relationship with the players, so if players want to discuss an issue with them, they are generally allowed. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:03 a.m. Now, I thought it was interesting that Perk had THAT conversation the other night. Basically, he was telling the official, "Hey, why don't we make it OK for both of us to hold the other on the offensive end?" Which is funny because Perk is such a non-factor in the Thunder offense. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:04 a.m. So, sure, Randolph holding him is no problem. But Perk getting to hold onto Randolph? Now THAT would be hugely helpful. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:04 a.m. But the truth is that Perk and Co. have done a masterful job on Randolph this series. Our man AC Slater wrote about it today. Randolph is struggling, and that is a direct result of Perk.
Fan O Regg 11:04 a.m. Is Reggie Jackson going to be a consistent contributor the rest of this series. It's going 7 by the way.
Jenni Carlson 11:05 a.m. Well, I think that remains to be seen. He's been a non-factor way more games than he's been a factor, so we'll have to see if Game 5 is like Game 4 or Games 1-3. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:06 a.m. But I'll say this much -- Reggie seemed to get something very important figured out the other night. He can get to the basket against the Grizzlies. And he can get there just about any time he wants. Continue to drive it to the hoop, and he'll be a big-time factor the rest of the way. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:07 a.m. As for it going seven games, sure seems like it could. Though I though the OKC win in Memphis the other night was significant in that it showed the Thunder that it could win there. This franchise had only won one other playoff game in Memphis. So, could OKC win Game 6 there? I sure think so.
Jack Ramsay 11:07 a.m. Have you ever met Jack Ramsay or heard any cool stories about him?
Jenni Carlson 11:07 a.m. You know, I never did meet Dr. Jack. I'm sad that I never had the chance to either. I believe a couple of our other folks interviewed him on occasion. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:09 a.m. But while I had occasion to talk with Jeff Van Gundy, Steve Kerr, Sir Charles and others, Dr. Jack was one who I never quite crossed paths. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:09 a.m. Thoughts and prayers with his family and friends today. I was sorry to hear of his passing.
Billy Bob 11:09 a.m. Perkins has at times been inconsistent and has trouble with certain teams. But he appears to be a new man in this series. But judging from some of the comments on articles here, the haters still want to hate. Why?
Jenni Carlson 11:10 a.m. Got me, Billy Bob. Listen, there are some games and opponents where Perk's brand of defense aren't important. But the vast majority of opponents have a big man who Perk defends and defends very well. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:11 a.m. But a lot of people are only able to evaluate the value of player based on what they do offensively. Clearly, Perk's offense is what it is. Limited, at best. But defensively? He's one of the best in the league at defending the rim. That's not just my opinion. That's what the stats say. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:11 a.m. So, against the Grizzlies, Perk has been big. No two ways around that. And if the anti-Perk contingent doesn't want to see that, well, that's their own problem.
Dalton 11:12 a.m. It is unfashionable to me that Russ and KD are struggling this bad. I would imagine that it will end, as I believe that is key to putting away the Grizzlies in 6 or 7. What do you think?
Jenni Carlson 11:12 a.m. Unfashionable? I assume you mean "unfathomable", though what you wrote made me laugh. Call KD and Russ unfashionable and they might come for your head! :) ...
Jenni Carlson 11:13 a.m. I agree that seeing both of these guys in such a funk is hard to wrap your head around. Especially KD. I mean, he missed some shots these past two games that he hasn't missed probably since junior high. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:14 a.m. My guess: KD will be way better Tuesday night. He'll be home. He'll be comfortable. And he'll be focused on not having another 15-point game. He's a prideful guy, and he will make sure that won't happen again.
Terry 11:14 a.m. What's the latest news on Frank Shannon? Do you think he'll be back playing with the Sooners?
Jenni Carlson 11:15 a.m. No new news that I know of. I suspect the situation is going through it's course within the university, and until something is figured out/ruled on, we probably won't hear much. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:16 a.m. As for Shannon's status, I said a week or so ago that I thought his career at OU was done. I don't have any insider info about it, but I know what I heard Mike Stoops say after the spring game. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:17 a.m. He sounded like a man who was thinking about a future without Frank Shannon. And if you look at it from the school's perspective, it doesn't want any hint that it takes sexual assaults on campus lightly. That's the kind of thing that hurts your university, and if there's a chance something could hurt the university, David Boren won't allow it.
Thunder Up 11:17 a.m. Many people still wanting to bash on Perk even though he has been really good in this series.Do you think the Thunder would be even in the series without his contributions on both ends?
Jenni Carlson 11:18 a.m. Nope. Think about how much we've seen Steven Adams. He's played, what, 20 minutes maybe in these first four games. Clearly, the Thunder doesn't think he's ready for this type of high-stakes basketball. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:18 a.m. I really thought this might be a series where Adams showed his level of readiness to be the Thunder center. Instead, he's been stuck on the bench. That's largely because Perk is still one heck of a defender.
Bill Thomas 11:19 a.m. Think the Thunder have figured out that they may need a little more hustle to beat Memphis? They looked tired and lazy at times in game 3.
Jenni Carlson 11:19 a.m. I don't know that hustle was the missing ingredient, but urgency sure seemed to be lacking. Maybe we're using different words to describe the same thing, though. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:20 a.m. The Thunder just didn't look like it took Game 3 as the serious situation that is was. But Game 4 was a much different story. Much better defense. Much better focus. And that kept them from disaster, because the way KD and RW shot, they wouldn't have won Game 4 without that defense and focus.
Guest 11:20 a.m. Concerning Donald Sterling. The world is what it is,,,,So lets just move on and enjoy the Thunder.
Jenni Carlson 11:21 a.m. Well, that's one way to look at it. Or you could look at this as an opportunity to have a public dialogue about the fact that racism is still a very real problem in our country. I hope we as a nation do the latter.
Badger 11:21 a.m. The Energy opener sold out, and many of the upcoming games are nearly sold out - does this disprove the soccer haters who said that the game would never succeed here?
Jenni Carlson 11:22 a.m. I thought the crowd the other night was very telling. On the night that the beloved Thunder has a must-win game at 8:30, the Energy's game at 7 is still packed. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:23 a.m. But that's one game. I have no reason to believe that the big crowds won't continue, but I'm interested to see what happens. Can the team still get lots of folks in the heat of the summer, once the newness wears off? I'm interested to find out the answer to that question.
jimmy 11:23 a.m. jenni...going back to college basketball, the head coach at Creighton (who's name escapes me), and his star player who happens to be his son and still living at home ---- it's the weekend, the son (star player) needs $20 to go out with his friends, and also needs to borrow dad's car (the head coach) ----- does the fact that it is a father/son relationship, in addition to being a coach/player relationship, keep that sort of thing from being an NCAA violation?
Jenni Carlson 11:24 a.m. The McDermotts, Greg and Doug. I don't know exactly the answer to that question, but my suspicion is that their pre-existing relationship trumps any NCAA rules. And they have a rock-solid pre-existing relationship status. Greg's been there from the start!
Guest 11:24 a.m. I agree Perkins play has really stepped up. That being said, Could Randolph be off on his game like Durant has been for awhile?
Jenni Carlson 11:25 a.m. It's a possibility, but much like we've given Tony Allen credit for his defense on KD, you also have to give Perk credit for his defense on Randolph.
Terry 11:25 a.m. Now if we can just get all the factors working in the Thunder's favor: Durant gets hot again, Jackson plays consistently well like last night, Perk continues his excellent defense, etc. do you think the Thunder go all the way?
Jenni Carlson 11:25 a.m. I've always thought this team had the pieces to be a championship team. But the Western Conference is full of landmines. Can the Thunder survive them? Stay tuned.
Terry 11:26 a.m. Wow, I'd sure hate to be a Clipper player right now. Cz
Terry 11:26 a.m. Whoops. Let me start over. Accidentally hit "Enter" I'd sure hate to be a Clippers player right now. What can the league do? Can they force Sterling out?
Jenni Carlson 11:27 a.m. I have been so focused on the Thunder and the OKC marathon that I haven't read up on what the league might have the power to do. I assume they could force an owner out, but I'm not sure how it would work. It would surely be a legal nightmare, but Sterling is already a nightmare so the legal trouble would surely be no worse than he is. ...
Jenni Carlson 11:29 a.m. And yes, being a player for the Clippers right now would be a challenge. In a rough series. Fighting for your playoff lives. Now this?
cowboyman 11:29 a.m. Nash returning for his senior season? I remember when the cowyboy fans claimed he was a 1 and done. over under how many nba games he plays in his career at 20? Not counting summer league games as nba games either. Hope he speaks a foreign langue.
Jenni Carlson 11:31 a.m. He might never be an NBA star, but we saw how much Markel Brown improved during his career. Brown is now expected to be a late first-round, early second-round guy. I could see Nash getting to the same area. And if that happens, who knows what could become of his NBA career?
Jenni Carlson 11:31 a.m. OK, folks, I've got to run. Thunder practice awaits. Be sure to join Thunder beat writer Darnell Mayberry for tomorrow's chat. He'll have all your pre-Game 5 talk.
