Jenni Carlson: Nothing goes to plan for OSU's Zac Robinson in loss to Texas

STILLWATER — Zac Robinson congratulated his buddy Colt McCoy, then waited to do the same with the Texas quarterback's coach.

The Oklahoma State quarterback waited out a television interview before finally speaking with Mack Brown. Then with his teammates long gone from the Boone Pickens Stadium turf, Robinson trotted off the field alone.

He had the same solitary feeling much of Saturday night.

A game that held so much promise ended with a thud, a 41-14 loss to Texas. This was a high-stakes contest against a top-caliber opponent. This was a night that OSU needed its stars to shine brightest.

Robinson knew it, too.

"I felt like I would have to play almost a perfect game, run around and make plays," he said.

Robinson needed to be great.

He was anything but.

He played his worst game of the season, throwing four interceptions, two that were returned for touchdowns. He managed only 143 yards passing and 32 yards rushing, a far cry from the eye-popping, head-turning numbers he's posted of late.

To understand how much he struggled, you need only look at two numbers — Robinson's passing yards (143) and the Longhorns' interception return yards (139).

Until late in the fourth quarter, Texas had more yards on interception returns than Robinson had passing.

That's no way to beat the Longhorns.

"The margin of error against a team like this is so small," OSU co-offensive coordinator Gunter Brewer said. "In this type of defense where they put a lot of pressure on you ... we've got to be able to make the plays when we get our opportunities. We didn't come up with those.

"You've got to give them credit, too. They made some plays defensively. Unfortunately when they made them, they ended up either in scores or they were really big. They hurt a lot."

Texas has an outstanding defensive secondary. The Longhorns are fast and quick and athletic. Because of that, they can take chances other defenses can't, jumping a route or breaking on a ball, and oftentimes, they can make plays that offenses don't see coming.

On Robinson's first interception, for example, he saw Dameron Fooks in man coverage.

"This is going to be a first down," he thought when the ball left his hand.

Instead, Curtis Brown broke on the ball, stepping in front of Fooks and intercepting the ball.

He returned it 77 yards for a touchdown.

"The guy just made a great play," Robinson said. "It seemed like they were all over just about everything we had. There were probably times that I should've just taken it and tucked and ran or something."

That became more and more difficult to do the deeper the hole the Cowboys dug for themselves. When they found themselves down 20 points early in the second half, they had to throw the ball.

That only compounded the Cowboys' woes and Robinson's struggles.

"As a quarterback, you start thinking that you need to get it back," he said. "You do start pressing a little bit when you get down like that. You start forcing things."

Robinson and the Cowboys didn't expect to be in such dire straits against the Longhorns.

The way he was playing heading into the game, he had a chance to put his team in a BCS bowl and himself in the Heisman Trophy race. Had Robinson led the Cowboys to an upset of the Longhorns, all sorts of glory would've been within reach.

Like so many things Saturday night, that didn't go as planned for Robinson.

"As a college football player, everyone has bad games," Cowboy tailback Keith Toston said. "Unfortunately, one of his bad games was on a big stage."

Not to keep beating a dead horse... but for tose of you that don't get it. How could forward progress have been called as having been stopped when no whistle blew or no official had signalled the play was over until after Sexton had the ball in his possession? OSU lost. But for you idiots that didn't watch the game. It wss a bad call. It was a take-away. It doesn't matter now!

I'm an Orange bleeding Cowboy and I love my school, but our offense stunk it up. Predictable and almost feeble (our offense looked like a bunch of "nursing home allstars"). We ran out of silver platters to hand the ball to Colt McCoy on. Unless we can compete with OU and TX, we are still no better than 3rd rung on the South's ladder. Gundy needs to do some soul searching as he looks to next year and the offense. Will it mean new staff, new offensive coordinators, or what. Holder needs to nudge Gundy and get him to realize we must climb the next rung and soon. Great defense against a great TX team.

Mary, from what I saw, I couldn't disagree more with you that it was "clearly" the wrong call. I could have gone either way, but to say it was blatant or "clearly" the wrong call shows the homer you are! Incidentally, there are plenty of calls that go against the Horns and the Sooners! Making a statement like that makes you sound even dumber! As Allen says, forward progress is not a reviewable call. Oh, and yeah, there was no reason to "come unglued" because they didn't call anything on the Shipley play. Finally, maybe you should look at the scoreboard before you start blaming your team's loss on one call you think was "clearly" wrong, especially when there are a lot of folks who don't see it nearly as blatantly as you seem to!

Hook 'Em! Poor Okies! Poor Cowboys!

I'll start by saying I'm not a Sooner fan trying to rub anything in. Just watching real football (NFL) and saw an obvious fumble that was ruled down by forward progress. When the coach wanted to challenge the call it was explained, by the head ref, that forward progress is not a reviewable play. Guess what OSU fans.....don't blame the refs for the call in the 2nd quarter of the game last night. The officials did the right thing once the line judge ruled forward progress. 41-14 is a butt whipping, not a bad call from a ref.

U guys want sum cheese with yalls whine? U guys will only lose 1 more game, be happy with that .
Oswho, Philadelphia - Nov 1, 2009 at 3:21 pm
Rarely does OSU get the calls from the referees playing against Texas or OU. You have to understand that most of the referees probably were on Texas' and OU's rosters at one time. I was going to come unglued had they called a penalty on Shipley's punt return fumble. With all the crazy rule changes, might as well be playing flag football. I can tell you one thing, though! When a Texas receiver is still on his feet bouncing around like a pinball and Andre Sexton strips him of the ball it should be OSU's ball. Somehow I get the feeling had the Texas receiver broken free and scored a touchdown that the refs would have concurred that the play had not been blown dead. Why the play was not reviewed I have no idea, because clearly Sexton stripped the ball early and long before any forward progress had been sustained. I think there's an underwritten Big XII Clause that states that if Texas or OU are undefeated in the interest of preserving the best possible Bowl bid for the conference champion that the underdog team will have to play well enough to beat that team and whatever impact that the refs have on the game. I hope that the Big XII reviews this game to see if the refs were derelict in their duties and reprimanded accordingly

Put it behind you and "Press On" young man. Now is when we will really see what sort of character our team is made of. We can suck it up and get on with things and work our hardest to finish out the year with only 2 losses, Or we can let this get to us and go into a complete tail spin.

Things happen, get over it. There are a lot of good things to come if you keep working

Caitlyn, Edmond - Nov 1, 2009 at 1:21 pm
One way I judge the accuracy and overall truthfulness of any sports column regarding OSU football is how much the Cowgirl's fans whine, moan, and weep over the contents of it: the louder the wailing, the more spot-on the commentary is.

Judging by the comments here today by said fans, Jenni Carlson has written an excellent article - well done, ma'am!
Jason, Edmond - Nov 1, 2009 at 12:53 pm
This is just about as bad as that article she wrote about the quarterback eating fried chicken out of his mother's hands. Jenni, what is your issue with quarterbacks? You really think you can get away with pinning the loss entirely on one player?
Caitlyn, Edmond - Nov 1, 2009 at 12:28 pm
Jenni,
You must have missed the embrace of McCoy and Robinson after game,it was clear on TV broadcast, where were you Jenni.
UT according to announcers on TV stated that this UT team was the best team they had seen all year.Personally a matchup between UT and winner of Alabama and Florida at end of season is interesting,UT should play Florida in National Championship this year.
For OSU to lose to Houston and Texas is not necessarily a bad thing, everyone else has not fared so well w them either.
OSU is 6-2 and OU is 5-3 and Houston is 7-1 of course UT is 8-0.
UT should have been in National Title game last year after beating OU heads up and losing on last play of game by a remarkable play by Crabtree of T Tech.
Gundy has done a good job this year keeping the team up after losing to
All-American players in Bryant and Hunter.
What else do you expect a coach to do for goodness sake?
OU is not a lot better than OSU,this wil be a good game for sure,OU is a great program and pride but they are vulnerable this year even though their
defense is terrific,as good as Texas but offense is not.

I'm glad to see the Longhorns win as they are my favorite team, however it should would be nice to see OSU take national one of these days. I'm so tired of the Boomer Loosers attitude of the fans. They're the reason why I'm not a Sooner fan.

was hoping to see osu wear black jerseys for halloween but they didnt and missing the 42yrd fg at the beginning set the tone..missed oppty and 3rd down conversions by texas and 5 turnovers was huge...osu just wasnt up to the challenge...now finish strong with home games with texas tech and colorado and at iowa state and ou and go to your 4th consec bowl game 1st time in history..just keep it going..with big losses come new challenges and opptys...no matter how down cowboys fans feel...just think if you were usc fans..getting hammered by a good oregon team....play on cowboys...there is more football games to be played...go pokes..

Sorry Poke fan, but you're not a major college football program..lol When OU whacks you in a few weeks it will be back to the minor bowls where you belong.
Jolly, Edmond - Nov 1, 2009 at 8:44 am
The way some OSU fans talk, they are the only team in college football that has had bad calls go against them. OSU fans wake up, you want to rise to the upper tier of college football, simply win games. Great college teams win games if the calls go against them or not.

Poke choke? I don't think it's possible to choke in a game where you are an underdog and never had a lead. Unreal. Was it an ugly game? Sure. Except for the fact that OSU outgained Texas (even with all of the turnovers) and overall was much more competitive than the final score would indicate. OSU looked like OU the first half - moving the ball but unable to score due to dropped passes. Anybody who has a brain saw that OSU was not overmatched. They simply beat themselves. Either way, 6-2 at this point is still a solid year and puts OSU in 2nd in the Big 12 South with a lot of football left to play. Can't complain about that - although Sooner fans I'm sure will find something to bash. Weird time for that, considering they are 5-3 and struggled with mighty K State.
Kevin, Oklahoma City - Nov 1, 2009 at 8:40 am
I am not trying to make excuses but I am curious how the game would have went had the refs called an even game in the first half. I wish there was more punishment for refs that call that bad of a game other than sending them off to the next game the following weekend. The SEC finally did something by suspending a crew, unfortunately I think the BIG12 hired them to ref this game. Robinson would not have been in a position to force big plays to get back in it had th refs not had thier own agenda. Good game just

Brady, Ponca City - Nov 1, 2009 at 8:14 am
I blame all of the goon fans at work that were telling me they were rooting for OSU this weekend. It's like some sort of weird messed up Halloween curse.

But if you want the bottom line, you cannot beat Texas when you turn the ball over 5 times. As a matter of fact there are not a lot of teams that you can beat when you turn the ball over 5 times.
Matthew, Oklahoma City - Nov 1, 2009 at 7:45 am
This game was a lose-lose for me personally. I hate Texas and OSU with an intensity that cannot be described with words. But in a way I'm glad with the outcome, just so I don't have to hear all the stupid Poke fans talk sh*t. They're still second-best, and that's how it should be.

It almost looked at times that Zac still thought he was throwing to Dez and could put the ball up anywhere between the sidelines and Dez would come down with it. I've never been a fan of Zac's throwing motion. He throws from the ear and sometimes lower. He has good zip on the ball but he doesn't have the best touch like Josh Fields had. He's always tried to force the ball through coverage throughout his career at times. So Jenni there's your answer. This is why Zac is not mentioned as a Heisman contender. He shines against the lessers but never has come through against the "big dawgs".

Make no mistake, this game was a major setback for OSU's football program. One wonders if Gundy's flair is enough to get it done against the wise old sages in the Big XII Conference. One thing is clear, Mac Brown has Mike Gundy's number. Texas, a school with an enrollment of over 50,000 who plays in a stadium that seats over 105.000 where both talent and money literally do grow on trees. If this were high school it would be somewhat akin to a 6-A school playing a 4-A school. Still, with twenty two of the finest athletes on the field at all times, Texas manages to play ineptly and unprepared at times. Texas A & M and Texas Tech always seem to press Texas regardless of the talent differential. I could clearly see why Texas has always come back against OSU in the second half, albeit they didn't have to this year. They make tremendous adjustments at half-time. Mike Gundy's wizardry and gadgetry might work once against Texas, but going back to it twice is a huge mistake. Mac Brown puts the games outcome clearly on Colt McCoys shoulders. Colt never wavers. He doesn't throw into coverage, runs and gets what he can and takes the sack if need be. He throws over the top and rarely gets the ball batted down. I don't know if he has an NFL arm, but he does throw with NFL accuracy. One wonders if OSU's program wouldn't be better off in the hands of someone like Bill Young running the show. It might look a little more like Jim Stanley football with ball control offense and a stout defense, but I'd rather "win" rather than watch a mickey mouse offense try to do too much. Bottom line, Texas took OSU to the woodshed and gave us a good old fashioned *ss whooping!
