Job drain: Losses confirm economy’s deep rut

The economy’s dire straits were further confirmed with the final jobs report for 2008, released last week by the Labor Department.

The economy lost 2.6 million jobs last year, with nearly 2 million of the losses occurring in the year’s last four months. Experts said it suggests the recession picked up speed with the worsening financial sector crisis, making it likely bad conditions will persist well into 20...
