G.R. Carter has won more money aboard quarter horses than any jockey in history.

Now, the Pawhuska native and Oklahoma City resident is on the verge of breaking another record.

The quarter horse racing season opens Friday night at Remington Park, and Carter is just 56 wins shy of becoming the all-time wins leader in the American Quarter Horse Association.

It will be an achievement that will mean even more to Carter than topping the money earnings list.

“I am probably more proud of that (career wins) than setting the money record,” Carter said. “There is only one way to win a horse race and that is to be out in front.”

Carter, 46, set the money earnings mark in 2008, the year he won his second All-American Futurity. He has won $63.8 million in three decades of racing quarter horses, $17 million more than any other jockey.

“My career coincided with the prosperity of the quarter horse industry,” Carter said. “I have greatly benefited from the growth of quarter horse racing.”

The current wins leader is Lousiana’s Alvin “Bubba” Brosette, who retired with 3,631 career victories. Brosette is a jockey that Carter often competed against on the track.

“I got to ride a lot with him the last several years,” Carter said. “He really is a good guy. I know what it takes to set those kind of records. It pretty much is a lifetime achievement.”

Which is why breaking the win records is more meaningful to Carter than the earnings mark.
