John Rohde: OU in familiar spot; new territory for OSU

JOHN ROHDE Published: August 23, 2009
For Oklahoma, it’s familiar territory.

For Oklahoma State, it’s new territory.

And for the first time in our state’s history, two teams from the same territory are ranked in the top 10 of The Associated Press preseason college football poll.

The Sooners are at No. 3 while the Cowboys came in tied for No. 9 with Saturday’s release of the poll voted upon by 60 media members.

Defending national champion Florida received 58 first-place votes (96.7 percent), becoming the most overwhelming pick in the history of the preseason poll.

The AP poll has been in existence since 1936 and the preseason poll since 1950.

This is the first time in history OSU has been ranked in the Top 10 of the preseason poll and the fourth time it has been ranked before the season commenced.

Lofty preseason rankings are nothing new to the Sooners.

This is the 51st time OU has appeared in the preseason poll (second to Ohio State’s 56) and the 41st time the Sooners have started in the top 10.

OU’s average preseason ranking of 6.51 is the highest of any program.

The Sooners have 679 all-time appearances in the AP poll, which rank fourth all-time. The Cowboys have 131 all-time appearances. Tulsa has 41.

How high you start in the poll is flattering, but how high you finish is what matters.
