Almost two months ago, The Oklahoman published a series of stories about Oklahoma’s prescription drug abuse epidemic.
At that same time, we launched the Facebook group Oklahoma’s Addiction and Mental Health Community.
The goal of this group is to provide a space to have civil and productive conversations about two of the most pressing issues in Oklahoma. Oklahoma has some of the highest rates of mental illness in the nation and a high rate of residents who die because of their addictions.
In the Facebook group, we share personal victories, discuss how to solve various issues that group members are facing and share links to different types of news articles and discuss them.
Anyone is welcome to join, although the conversation is not a “free-for-all.” We have community guidelines that you should read before joining.
I am the group’s moderator and am happy to answer any questions that you might have.
You can join the Facebook group by clicking this link and requesting to join.
I hope that by having a place where we can continue the discussion beyond the news cycle, we can better educate each other and our fellow Oklahomans about not only what it’s like to have a mental illness or addiction but also what solutions our state could implement to better serve these communities. Join us.
