JONES — For the first time in about a year, students at Jones High School have the chance to eat their breakfasts and lunches on school property.

District officials recently opened the school’s new 7,500-square-foot lunchroom, Superintendent Mike Steele said.

Opening the lunchroom marks a milestone: The school is nearly self-reliant again, he said.

A fire on Dec. 10, 2007, destroyed the high school, including the school’s cafeteria. Since then, school meals have been served at Jones First Baptist Church’s fellowship hall, which is across the street from the high school.

The new building does not have any cooking equipment, so school meals will continue to be made at Jones Elementary School and brought to the high school.

School officials expect to use the building as a lunchroom for at least two years, or until the new high school and cafeteria is built.

After that, the building will be used for storage or classes.

The story could have mentioned that FEMA assisted in procurement of the building with little cost to the school district or taxpayers.
