SYDNEY (AP) — Northern Ireland international Jonny Steele has signed a two-year deal to play for Newcastle in Australian football's A-League.
The 28-year-old Steele has played three times for Northern Ireland, most recently this year against Uruguay and Chile. He was released last week by the New York Bulls where he played with Australia international Tim Cahill.
Steele said he spoke to Cahill about a possible move and Cahill was positive about Newcastle and the A-League. Midfielder Steele said the A-League is "a growing league with lots of opportunities. I'm just looking forward to getting to Newcastle and seeing for myself what it's all about."
